Adult Literacy and Numeracy

Information:

We have experienced Tutors from HALC (Hagley Adult Literacy Centre) who will assist with reading, writing, maths, computer skills, workplace communication and help learners work towards their NCEA Level 1 standards.
Classes are kept small so that individuals can go at their own pace and level. 

Requirements:

  • Classes are free to NZ Citizens and Residents, but full attendance to classes is required.
  • Runs every Tuesday and Thursday 9:30am-12:30pm
  • You will also need to meet the Tutor prior to starting class.
  • Classes run during school term only, with breaks during the school holidays.

Community Shed (Woodwork)

Every Tuesday 10:00am - 12:00pm

Learn Skills. Share Skills. Be involved.

The Community (Woodwork) Shed brings people in the community together to:

  • Learn skills.
  • Share new skills.
  • Have a great time catching up and have plenty of laughs in a supportive shared space.
  • Be a part of the community.

It is a safe and wonderful place for everyone in the community to make projects while learning to:

  • Use the correct ways of using hand tools.
  • Safely learn to operate power tools and woodwork machinery.
  • Skilled guidance from the three tutors in a well equipped workshop.
  • For both unskilled and skilled people. 
  • You can work on your personal project or you may assist with any community projects the Shed and Centre are involved in.
  • The Shed is fully equipped with tools, machinery and equipment that can be used for a variety of small to medium sized projects.

Stone Carving Class

Every Wednesday 10-12PM

Develop your carving skills!

Learn to carve stone using traditional hand tools! Using just a hammer and chisel you will enjoy the satisfaction of turning a piece of raw Oamaru stone into a wonderful creation for your garden or for indoors. Classes are held in the stone carving yard, which is in front of the Community Woodwork Shed at Rowley Resource Centre. 

  • The cost is dependent on the size of stone that you will need to create your masterpiece. It will be a small cost.
  • The classes are run every Wednesdays at Rowley Resource Centre during school term only, between 10am – 12pm. 
  • Classes are kept small and limited due to space restrictions. 
  • All tools will be provided.
  • Ideal for those with little or no stone carving experience, however all are welcome. 
  • For more information, you can pop into our Centre on Wednesdays between 10am-12pm to talk to Eddie Cook, the Stone Carving Tutor who will explain to you everything you will need to know before you can start. Requirements:
Please ensure you wear appropriate warm (old) clothing and suitable footwear (closed-toe, closed-heel shoes) as you will be working outdoors in a sheltered area.
Long hair must be tied back. 
You will need to wear a mask during class, due to the stone dust.
